The Europeans brought with them pedigree dogs to hunt, guard and protect them. But the
dogs succumbed to the heat of the African sun, its harsh environment, and epidemics.
However, the Europeans settlers marveled at the tough native African Ridgebacks, a
short-coated honey-shaded breed. They were strong muscular dogs with their own survival
specialties - to run silently on the hunt, the agility to escape predators, to adapt to
special circumstances, and superior intelligence. They marveled, too, at their
personalities, loyal to the core.
